According to The World Economic Forum, forthcoming technological breakthroughs are expected to “rapidly shift the frontier between the work tasks performed by humans and those performed by machines and algorithms… These transformations, if managed wisely, could lead to a new age of good work, good jobs and improved quality of life for all, but if managed poorly, pose the risk of widening the skills gaps, greater inequality and broader polarization.”
As automation, robotics, and A.I. increasingly become major factors in workforce productivity, smart companions are looking to upskill and reskill their current employees as a means of addressing the talent gap.
Organizations that offer an upskilling program report increased productivity from employees, noting a correlation between training and engagement. When employees sense job security and clear pathways for career advancement, their capacity to produce good work increases dramatically. Furthermore, upskilling existing employees saves valuable time and money that would otherwise be spent on recruiting, onboarding, training and related costs to bring on new employees.

However, as a practice, hiring diverse peoples is on the decline in technology. A Pew Research report shows “that although the number of computer-based roles has grown 338 percent in the United States since 1990 — when nearly a third (32 percent) of those in computer-related roles were female — only a quarter (25 percent) of those new positions were filled by women. And the problem is even greater when we look at underrepresented communities and people of color: The same Pew report shows that African Americans represent only 9 percent of the STEM workforce, for example, and Latinx workers just 7 percent.”
Fixing the issue starts with your organization owning up to its biases, whether they’re intentional or not.
